Who should not be in the Hall?

1B: A and B
2B: E - the others it is not possible to tell without additional information (era played in for example)
3B: - none that I could say for sure
SS: - probably M but it is hard to tell, since shortstop is a position where defense is often the priority.

Maranville is one of the greatest defensive players of all time according to people who saw him play and Evers was a better than league average hitter at second base in an era where second basemen were .230 slap hitters plus he was a good fielder, I think both are reasonable.

My only problem is that many times I think guys get in because of who they were, and better performers get shut out because the sports writers of their era didn’t like them. Dick Allen being the prime example.

Not all the players elected to the HOF belong there. Not a secret. Some were chosen because (some say) they were “Friends of Frisch”. It has been widely reported that Frankie Frisch, when part of the Hall’s Veteran’s Committee made sure his favorite teammates got selected. George Kelly was always used as an example of someone whose membership was owed to his friendship with Frankie Frisch.

The HOF is at this point a hodgepodge of individuals, selected by different groups using criteria that have changed over time, both explicitly and implicitly. Many many selections could be classified as idiosyncratic. No one should assume that there is, was, or ever will be consistency in terms of who is in and who is out. At this point I pretty much ignore it entirely. The museum is a special place, though I haven't been there in 20 years or so. I really don't even pay attention to or care about who has and who hasn't been awarded HOF election.

BEEN TO THE HALL SEVERAL TIMES, AND I AGREE IT IS SPECIAL.

Joe Posnanski is doing a great series this month in The Athletic on the 100 most deserving people not in the HOF. I highly recommend it.
