I just redshirted a Freshman and he doesn’t like the color red.

His WE dropped from 27 to 16... so from not great, to worse. He has high potential in key core areas, so how bad will his growth be this season? Will any of his WE come back next season?

This is Knight. Non-exhibitions haven’t started yet. I could reverse my decision if I have to.

It will basically be like signing a 16 WE player. It will grow just like a player that starts at 16, so very slow.

If redshirting him this year means he’ll be a 4 year starter, you can expect his WE to finish around 40 at the end of his eligibility. You’ll have a high IQ player for longer, so I tend to look at that as an overall win. But that’s *if* the plan is to get him lots of starts beginning with his first year of eligibility. If he’s just going to sit on the bench for a year or two once eligible, the calculus changes a bit. His WE doesn’t get as high, so he doesn’t grow as fast, and he’s not the player you maybe want as soon as you want; and in that case, having him on the roster an extra year is no longer much of a positive. He becomes more of an albatross.

In general, the true “project” guys i redshirt, who are going to sit, I want them to have at least median WE. I don’t mind carrying a player or two for a few seasons as insurance against lost battles or EEs in D1, but if they’re going to sit, they need to grow without PT. If they have low WE, and I need them to grow, I have to have a place for them to play.

Hmmm. I don’t know what to do.

He’s a guard and I need him to grow in BH and Pass. He’s green in both. I don’t have a place for him to get many (or any) minutes this season. I have 3 Sr guards graduating so I am depending on this dude to step in next season.

Someone go to his house for me and convince his mom that Redshirt is a great idea.

If you can start him most games next year, honestly, I wouldn’t sweat the WE drop too much. In the long run, his fifth year will be a lot more valuable than next year to you. It’s mostly about where he fits into your plans. If he’s a pretty key piece for you, and as long as you can live with him getting starts and minutes while he grows in those areas next season, I’d probably let the redshirt stick.
