Late signing FA question Topic

So I signed a switch-hitting FA 3B decently late into the season, about game 108 or so.

He is 29, has an OVR of just 6, Patience of 69, had no prior MLB experience (topping out at two AAA years) and had dropped his demands to 1x$1M, prorated. He cost me about $350K. He's sort of a valuable bench piece. He fields well and hits lefties a bit. And, of course, he switch hits....getting that bump. I don't remember what he was asking at the beginning of the FA process, probably 3 years at $5M, or something like that. It was too much for every GM, whatever it was.

Anyway, he is not listed on my FA list for next season and he's not an Arb guy, either.

So what is he, fish or fowl? Will he walk, threaten to walk unless I meet his demands, or stay, realizing the generosity of my recent offer, giving him his first varsity experience (as I hope)?

Oh...he went 3-4 in his first MLB game. He seems to like it here.

Maybe with an overall of 6 he is retiring.

I'm just trying to find out his status for next season. Player Profile: Aledmys Cedeno - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports

I have 30 guys under MLB contracts currently. When I look ahead to next season, 11 are already under contract, 8 are Arb eligible (each is in his 3rd or 4th MLB year), 1 is a MLB FA positional guy, 4 are MLB FA pitchers.

Then there 5 are guys who I have under minimum contracts this season, their rookie year. They don't show up on the FA or Arb list.

And then there is Cedeno. So he's like my five minimum salary guys, showing up nowhere. He's a rookie and his prorated salary is less than the yearly minimum, but his final ask was actually $1,040,000.

My assumption is that all indicates he comes back next season at a $343K salary.

What do you guys think?

I don't remember the exact rule, but this is what happens to guys who reach major league free agency without having ever gone through the arb eligibility process. If he were on a multi-year ML deal, he'd play it out and become a free agent again. Since he's on a one-year deal, he is still eligible for automatic renewal and will re-sign at $500k per season until he reaches arb eligibility. I'm not even sure this is in the FAQ anywhere, but that's why he doesn't show up on any of the contract screens for next season.

So three years of $500K? I'm good with that. My current 3B, under contract for 2 more seasons, is a LHB, GG winner, 79 Durability guy. Having a very cheap guy who can cover 30-35 starts a year with a glove and a not terrible vL bat is valuable to me. He gives me some COF flexibility, too.

Thanks damag!

Actually I think you get two at $500k. You've got this season at 1M and then I believe two at 500k. But you'll know because you'll still have arb rights after, he'll show up on the arb report the season before he's eligible.
