I'm wondering if there is a maximum number of minutes I can practice an individual player on any rating category, after which I'm just wasting minutes. For example, if I practice a player on REB for 35 minutes am I only getting the benefit of a lower number maximum - say, 25 minutes - and wasting 10 minutes of time I could use elsewhere? If there is a maximum number, is it the same for all categories or does it differ from one to another? Thanks for any info you can provide!

there are diminishing returns from putting more minutes in, the forum fact is this is around 20 minutes but really its a smooth gradient. there is no magic cutoff. i have guys over 20 all the time, but you are going to get less return from the 20->30 increase than the 10->20, no doubt. its not horribly hard diminishing returns, you don't get almost nothing, maybe half... eventually less. but if you were to tell me you regularly had young players over 30 in a category i'd probably raise an eyebrow. for some players there's only 2-3 things worth practicing, sometimes its more like 0 even, when they are capped in most/all stuff. there its fine to go higher, but for sort of regular freshman/sophmores, you should generally be south of 30 in the large majority of cases.

I think there are probably some small diminished returns once you get past 10 or 12, but it gets more noticeable when you get higher than 20. LP and PER seem to suffer less diminishing returns when they are green. I will rarely put more than 20 in any category until a player is a senior, and maxed out in multiple categories.

The reason I ask is I have a new recruit who has a low DEF rating, but it's blue so I was hoping to assign as many useful minutes as possible to get him up to speed ASAP. (I need to keep him rostered.) He has high numbers in categories with yellow or red color, so there are not all that many categories I can improve over time. He also has 99 WE, in case that matters for your opinion. I was thinking of 25+ minutes on DEF before posting this...

If he has 99 WE he's going to develop super fast no matter what numbers you use.

Yeah, a guy like Erickson would be a special case. You’d don’t see many freshmen bigs coming in with 90 rebounding and 80 LP. But his ath/def will be a real liability until you get them up quite a bit. The WE is encouraging.

You can safely 0 out any category that’s red, whether it’s a core or not. You won’t really gain much from 35 instead of 25, but if you’re zeroing more than a couple categories, and only focusing on, say, conditioning and defense, and maybe just holding steady with 7 on one or two others, like FT or whatever, I can see ignoring the diminished returns, because that’s still where the best value for this particular guy probably is.
