Role players, role players! Think of the core skill sets as filling a role.

As a beginner, if you sign a class of 3... 2 role players (useful at distributing & defense or rebounding & defense) with 1 future star, you’re set.

The recruits all the coaches are piling up on are (usually) future studs. Recruiting can be a treasure hunt... there are plenty out there that go overlooked.
I like where this post started to go. My advice for new guys is to tier your recruits, based off talent and expected cost (more on this part in a minute). Let's say you have 4 openings......

Tier 4 - find a player that you like or fits a team need but isn't exactly screaming greatness. He HAS to be free. So once recruiting starts, you find a big with "potential for" 68 ATH, 85 REB, and maybe even a little PAS like 35. On his considering list if it's only you and sims, that'll lock down your REB issue at no cost.

Tier 3 - maybe a more well rounded player. Other humans are on the list. But you raced out in front, offered the ship and promises, appearing as if you're serious about the player. Sometimes humans will back off in that case.

Tier 2 - a guy that SHOULD be battled for. Someone you'll have to spend some cash and promises on. But maybe just 5 HV will get him.

Tier 1 - your class stud. The best player that you can't get into a battle for, that you can invest most or all of your budget on. Preferences are good. And you have some sort of assumed edge in preferences and recruiting dollars over your opponent.

Now, as a new coach, how do you know who you can get for free or who you have to invest in? You won't! And neither will a lot of folks. Its all relative to the other coaches and how much interest they show. As long as you're checking each and every cycle and watching the movement of yourself compared to others, you can get a feel for what you may have to do to land the recruit.

If you unlock the ship at the same time, what happens next cycle? You/him move up or down? After you offer promises, reevaluate again. The cycle after promises, reevaluate again. By continuing this you can tell if you're going to land a player free possibly, if no one is offering more effort along the way and you're just sitting in the lead. Or you can tell you'll have to battle if every time you add effort, you're not moving up (or maybe you're moving down).

My tiers were just random examples. But the point is, don't go for 4 studs when you're new if you don't know exactly how to get them all yet with your approach. You can succeed with some role players
