Guess the Odds - he just wants to play Topic

And I learn maybe not to be as afraid of challenging mo money D1's!

I’m often telling folks by sitemail, it’s ok to take a risk, but make sure it’s a calculated one. New players in lower levels, I usually caution to stay away from battles with D1 coaches in general, but I add that with some experience, there are spots where it will make some sense to battle. It takes experience to know where those spots might be. In this instance, I could have been burned, because the coach had more resources than I figured they would have, or want to spend. That effort modified by any minutes promise for a player that just wants to play probably overwhelms my effort. But my *original* estimation in prioritizing the recruit, that he wasn’t really the type of player that a D1 coach was likely to want to start or promise minutes to as a freshman, turned out to be correct, and that saved me, or at least kept me in the game. But I knew the risk going in with this guy. He was my preferred second target, but I just couldn’t commit to him until he got eligible, so I was developing backups anyway.

I actually had some backup options for both of the guys I took shots at, which I could have gone to had things not worked out, and for FB/press teams that is really important. These two will end up being a bit better over 4 years, but the other guys would have kept me afloat, and ready to reload. I had to take three players like that last season, including a soph and junior Juco.

100% Team B
100% Team A

Being D1 and having 6 more HV's overwhelms the D2 offer.

Question- Why would Team B wait so long to offer the schollie? Makes no sense to me. Enlighten me.
I think some people believe that offering the promises first increases your preferences, which then increases the value of the scholarship. But on the flip side, the scholarship unlocks the promises faster so I'm not sure if it's really worth waiting.

If it is a recruit I know I am going to have to battle for, then I am 100% waiting to unlock and promise minutes before the scholarship. I am fairly confident that boosting the preference for the scholarship is worth more recruiting value than is lost from the unboostedness of the extra APs needed to unlock the promise.

i agree that from a mathematical standpoint, you are probably right. i can't imagine that the preference boosts AP but not the ship, although i certainly don't know that for sure. although i also don't know if these reduced effort scholarships in d2/d3 are really worth more than the AP it take to unlock the ship either...

for me in d1 though, time is always a factor, so the math is largely irrelevant there

Right, to gil’s point, even if we accept that the scholarship is “effort” that is modified by the playing time preference, which has technically never been officially affirmed to my knowledge, it’s not just the value APs in between that you’re giving back. You’re also giving back cycles which could significantly impact the future shape of battles. If you’re coming from behind anyway, and the plan is to sneak in late, then like I said, that’s one thing. That’s rarely where I’m at, though, tactically.

For instance, in this case, if this player was eligible, and was my top priority (he wasn’t, but assume he was), the smarter play would have been for me to offer ASAP and then make the promises I’d be willing to keep as soon as possible, to let the AP I’d be investing in him start accruing much sooner. That builds a much bigger firewall against the late D1 challenge. This is, not coincidentally, the approach I took with the other guard I signed, who was actually my top priority, a guy I needed to invest all-in effort to keep a late-charging D1 from getting past past moderate and taking without a roll in the first session.

Offering sooner would also have likely kept the D3 away, so if D1 challenges never materialize, I don’t have to invest any resources at all.
