How about 1971? Who's Next - The Who, Aqualung - Jethro Tull, Sticky Fingers - The Stones, Blue - Joni Mitchell, L.A. Woman - The Doors, What's Going On - Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin, There's a Riot Going On - Sly and the Family Stone, RAM - Paul McCartney, Madman Across the Water - Elton John, Nilsson Schmilsson - Harry Nilsson, Fragile - YES, Tapestry - Carole King, Masters of Reality - Black Sabbath, Imagine - John Lennon, Pearl - Janis Joplin, Mudslide Slim and the Blue Horizon - James Taylor, Tupelo Honey - Van Morrison...I could go on...
Madman Across the Water is an extremely underrated song and album.

The ONLY album on that list I would call great is REM.
I was owning/operating a CD/Music store in 1992.
I purchased the new releases for the store every week for all of 1992.
REM was huge and a great LP.
The Alice N Chains releases sold real well and have some outstanding stuff.
The Black Crowes release was VERY spotty, but showed promise.
The rest of the list were just mainstream pablum!
Thoughts on Rage?
Tool - Opiate was released in 1992 also!
Hey now! I should have read through.

Worms, I want to really give your list some consideration before making my selection on your poll, but my knee-jerk is 1991.
Imo Ten was head and shoulders better than any other grunge album. Lots of good grunge that year, and some other solid cds in your op from 1991. I'll look over them more closely this week and make a selection.
Check out Uncle Anesthesia from Screaming Trees in 1991. Probably the most underrated Seattle band of that area. Mostly known for being on the Singles soundtrack. Sweet Oblivion the next year is one of my all-time favorite albums.

I saw Screaming Trees open for Alice In Chains at the old Mercer Arena in December 1992. Gruntruck opened ahead of Screaming Trees. Fantastic show!
