I had this Freshman that I promised playing time to, and he did not start a couple of games. The game that got me in trouble with him he got in foul trouble and didn't get his 20 minutes. He ended up starting and playing like 30 minutes a game for the final 15. He just said he is leaving cause I broke my promise!!! What???????????? I feel cheated. What do you think?

I don't know the exact situation and numbers with your player, but a few things to consider:
1. Games in which a player fouls out do not hurt your promises.
2. A player generally needs 80% or more of his promise to be met in order to stay. Although there are many reports of players leaving with higher than 80%. I would use 90% as a rule of thumb to be safe. For example, a player with a 20 minute promise would need 18 mpg to stay happy. For promised starts, you could give them 24+ starts in the regular season to be on the safe side.

If you didn't meet these goals, then you shouldn't feel cheated. I mean, did you break your promise?

isn't the email complaint linked to falling below 80% at any time?

After game 7/8, if a promise is below the estimated 80% threshold you get the email. ie. if a player has started 5 of the first 8 games, at that time he's well below the % minimum, and you get the note.
Even if he starts the final 20 games, you may never get the email that all is good.

I saw the Rupp #2 recruit in the country transfer a few seasons back. Promised a start during recruiting, he started the first 5 games. Came off the bench for game 6, and the coach claims he wasn't able to connect for a couple days to change the lineup. In spite of overall 90% start, he transferred at season end.

If it’s the guy on your team that lost 36 WE this season…it’s because you redshirt him as a Sophomore and he didn’t like it

Yeah, no opinion on the quality or fairness of the system, but best practice is to get to 21 or 22 starts and then start sitting the guy; or pick one or *maybe* two tough conference games before game 22 to sit them, but don’t even think about sitting them before game 12 or so. People go by a supposed 80% rule of thumb, but that’s not a real benchmark or anything. You have to stay above a certain threshold (for starts and minutes, if you’ve made promises for both) to keep a player happy, and players all have different tolerances for variance. Most players are alright if you stay above 80%, but a few are not; I’ve never heard of a guy who started the first 21 games and then sat, and then complained, but I suppose that’s possible, too. Promises theoretically might go all the way to 100% of regular season games for a very small number of players, though I don’t think that’s true.

I promised him a starting role and 20 minutes a game. I did not start him for two games early. He did not say anything. I put him back in the lineup the next game, and he only played 18 minutes, cause he had four fouls or fouled out, I can't remember. That's when I got the email, after that game. So, I switched him to play longer with foul trouble. He started all 15 or so of my remaining games, like I said averaging at least thirty minutes a game. The work ethic slowly went back up, that's why I don't understand. Players work ethic goes up when they are happy.

No, he stayed, the guy who lost 36 work ethic.

Is the player Boydston? If so, this is a bit strange, unless you promised him 25mpg. He started 22/26 regular season games and all CT games (which can help fulfill promises). He averaged 25.2 minutes. That said, the 80% rule mlitney alluded to is only a general rule of thumb. Some guys get angry much easier and need more than 22 starts to be happy (when they’re promises a start). Also, Boydston’s WE dropped by 15 points. The ONLY way to know if a player is happy and won’t transfer is if you get a second email from him saying he’s happy. Without that email, the risk is still there he could leave.

Need a little more info Johnny. Can you tell us about his emails?

Edit: Wait, he started 4 of the first 8 games? That'll take forever to get to 80%. Guessing he failed the first two checkpoints and bounced because of that. You can't promise a guy a start and sit him 4 of the first 8 games... blatant break of the 80% rule

Edit 2: he lost 16 work ethic which is a pretty good indicator that he sent 2 angry emails in a row. Guessing Johnny missed something in his inbox
