Hey guys! Just as I was brainstorming unique ways to try and gain a competitive advantage in the game,I thought of a pitching strategy to throw out there and see what you guys thought: is it feasible to put together a pitching staff of all great relievers of some sort and have them throw shorter outings than starters or does that not work so well?

Been done with varying degrees of success.

Doing it now in Jersey League. Two LRA types, the rest sub 50 stamina. Been using two openers most of the season and setting everyone else at SuA.

It's doable but a PITA to manage. I have to check my staff almost every cycle. Only one of the LRA's is even going to hit the 162 IP qualifying mark.

Team is going to make the playoffs but they feel two or three players short of making a serious run.

One quirk - my worst pitcher (that I ended up demoting half way through the season) still leads my team in wins with a 13-4 record while sporting a 7.01 ERA. While my best pitcher is 1-5 with a 2.32 ERA.

A couple of teams in my league have used that approach. One year a team had two bullpen guys finish with 20 wins...I think they made it to the playoffs a few times. You still have to be able to cover the innings needed. You are going to need 7-8 guys that can get you 120-160 innings. 8 guys that average 140 innings still leaves you probably 350 innings short for the season. I think it could hurt you in the playoffs....how many of these high quality relievers can you find to cover the innings that you want pitching in the playoffs. With a conventional staff...you can make a run in the playoffs with 3 good starters and 3 good bullpen arms.
