D1 Transfers with more eligibility than listed... Topic

I've discovered that WIS might list D1 players who transfer away from D1 schools who sat out their first year with fewer eligible seasons could be listed with a different number of seasons remaining. The recruit's player card and the recruit pool search results showed only a single year of eligibility remaining but if I brought up his player card from the previous team, it showed he only played two seasons (and likely with a career GPA > 2.7 would likely have two more seasons if he signed).

The response I got from CS was that D1 recruits would be listed as if they do NOT meet the 2.7 career GPA (although for recruiting resources they do NOT follow that same convention if they end up on your roster).

So when recruiting transfers, coaches need to be extra careful on how many seasons are listed remaining and should try to find out how many seasons they played on the previous team if possible.

I sent in a ticket about that this morning here's their reply to me about a transfer player who shows 1 year left but was ineligible his 1st year

Hi,

When it comes to non-qualifiers, we always treat them as though they'll graduate as seniors since the extra year isn't guaranteed. However, it's certainly possible that this player would end up playing two more years. That would depend on all of the normal factors for non-qualifiers being eligible for a 5th year and deciding to take it.

Thanks

Yes, exact same response I got.

But when trying to do recruiting, unless you were an experienced/knowledgeable coach, some might trust what they see on the player card and search results.

been this way since early days - and yes, it can be awkward surprise if one doesnt check the player's actual stat history

Which isn't too hard... unless he transferred away because he didn't play at all the previous season (and the worst would be if the previous coach cut him after he just sat out so you would never know that you'd get him for 4 seasons instead of the 3 listed). If you were banking on getting him for only 3, you would have to try your hardest to have him *NOT* get 2.7 cumulative GPA.

[Edit] This wouldn't be an issue it they treated ineligible transfers by specifying both eligible seasons for the recruit's card and pool search results.

Ex. 1 or 2 seasons instead of just 1 season

How can you check the players stat history? They are no longer listed on the previous teams roster or under the past rosters section? What am I missing?

If he played any minutes in a game, he'll be listed on the box score for that game. Then you can open his profile to see stats and get an idea of what his ratings look like.

If he hasn't played any minutes, then you'll need to scout him.
