What Was Your Biggest Mistake as an Early Coach? Topic

I think my first (or a very early) D3 season I threw 80 AP at a four star international recruit in the first cycle hoping I might ink him with the overwhelming attention. I quickly realized even if I gave a top recruit 80K attention points each cycle, they are never going to sign with my C prestige D3 team.

Title speaks for itself, thought this topic would both be funny and informative for new guys (and guys like me who are basically new again lol).

I'll start.... So when I first started having some success with Hoops Dynasty, I still felt like my teams were constantly underperforming. I'm talking about clear-cut NT teams failing to make it, Sweet 16 type talent getting bounced in the first round, you get it. This ran all the way into the first season of Knight where I picked out a solid team but only managed to go around 500 because for SOME reason, I couldn't get the most out of my talent.

Turns out for YEARS I had kept my fatigue settings on "Playing Time" instead of the settings that actually work and not only that, I had guys playing way too many minutes. The second I changed over to fatigue, I went from a completely average coach to one who was able to turn things around despite no NT year 1 and become the first coach of Michigan State in Knight. Still think about how many seasons I wasted lol
What exactly do I need to do to avoid this? Thanks

When I first started playing, I picked a school that was right down the street from where I grew up. I scouted my state and just went after the top three guys that showed up, I didn't even look at their ratings.

Also gave way too much focus on overall rating.... I was probably going after guys with 2 athleticism and 99 durability and thought I was getting a steal.

Make sure on your depth chart, your substitution method is set to "fatigue" and not "target minutes"

Thinking that just because I beat all the sims in my all sim conference with uptempo 3-point shooting that this meant I should do the same when “underseeded” in the NT.

Spent like 3 grand in scouting DIII recruits. Then the one guy that was a JUCo that was worth taking I spent a ton of recruiting money on him and lost him in a dice roll.

good times.

Recruiting a player that looked too good to be true … and was, because of that 1 WE. Failing to notice a recruit you were going after hard would put you over the ‘six players in a class’ limit and therefore all of your effort was useless.
