I'm sure this is already been posted and forgive me for being lazy, but here is my question?

Am I wasting my time and money on ineligible D1 players as a D2 school? I signed a d1 recruit last season, and i think i got a message from my assistant saying he would probably leave at the end of the year. Is that the case? Always, sometimes, or never?

Asking because i'm thinking of going after another D1 player. I don't mind him missing out on a season if they were to stay, but if not, i might as well just have a walk on.

It's definitely cool to target inels. The only risk is that there is a "chance" they don't come to school and they go Juco. A very very small chance. But it does happen from time to time. As in I've recruited maybe 40 inels over time and I've had 2 go juco and I missed out.

But sometimes inels can be steals! Press teams, or certain coaches in general may not be interested in inels because they aren't available the first season. Due to that, some competition is eliminated and you can sometimes get a stud player for cheaper.

You find out the players decision, the minute the season rolls over and you check your roster. If he's on your roster, you're golden. If you go looking for him and see a crappy rated walk on that you didn't expect to see, you just got left in the dust and he's on to Juco ball. (I believe you get an email from him if he doesn't come to school)

Thanks dog. That cleared up any confusion that I had. Now I know the kid I signed last year as an ineligible that is still on my roster is going to stay. he just isn't improving via practices.

If a D1 player is ineligible and has a "wants to play" preference, is it safe for a D2 coach to promise minutes?

Yes, definitely. They obviously won't want any minutes during their ineligible season, but you'll need to meet all promises in the season after that (their 1st eligible season).
