If a non-qualifier sits out his freshman year, then plays sophomore, junior and senior seasons, does he get a fourth year based on GPA or is it unconditional?

My experience he always gets a 4th year.

As written in the rules--
D1-- conditional on GPA, > 2.7 iirc.
D2-- always
D3-- moot since everyone qualifies in D3.

Never had a D1 ineligible fall below 2.7, so I don't know if it actually works that way.

my understanding is dedelman's. however, i am wondering if this even still exists, the d1 2.7 limit? it seems somewhat tricky to work in the new 3.0 format. wondering if that is even still a thing?

anyone know of a ineligible leaving after his 4th season over grades?

Yep. I had one leave last season with a 2.5 GPA. To be honest, I really never checked on his GPA because I never had an ineligible leave their Senior year before. And, damn, he would have been the best player on this season's team.
