Some of the defensive ratings are mind-boggling. My favorite is the '17-'18 Rockets:

72 D - James Harden
37 D - PJ Tucker
There's too many errors like this example. Harden is a weak, lazy defender and Tucker is a tough, hardnosed defender but in the Sim it's the opposite smh.

too many ankle games (Paul Pierce) against my boys...

I think part of the D equation is steals and blocks (and used to be d boards) so if you are a reacher who gets the occasional grab you might get a boost to your rating
