OK, let's dig into this incredible mish-mash of a team I've frankensteined together.
After attempting several anchors, I determined that it was best to begin my chain with a top-notch hitter to build around. Therefore, I snagged 1895 Sam Thompson (Phillies) and his amazing mustache as my anchor. In the interest of keeping Sam's mustache happy, I drafted Sam's mustache-less teammates Ed Delahanty and Billy Hamilton to round out one hell of a 19th century OF.
Sam Thompson's Lineage
Sam Thompson died 11/7/1922 (his mustache died the next day). Joe Collins, who also did not have a mustache, was born a few short weeks later on 12/3/1922. I drafted 1957 Collins and couldn't resist his Yankees teammates Mickey Mantle and Billy Martin. Martin, of course, would have a mustache later in life - but in his playing days, clean shaven!
Joe Collins died 8/30/1989. His descendant is Carlos Frias, who was born on 11/13/1989. I drafted 2015 Frias and snagged his Dodgers teammates Clayton Kershaw and Kenley Jansen.
Mickey Mantle died on 8/13/1995, the day I began undergrad at Duquesne University. I remember sitting at a restaurant in Pittsburgh watching the ESPN coverage. His descendant is Amed Rosario, who was born on 11/20/1995. I drafted 2018 Rosario and Mets teammates Jacob deGrom and Seth Lugo.
Billy Martin died tragically on 12/25/1989. His descendant is Starlin Castro, who was born 3/24/1990. I drafted 2015 Castro and Cubs teammates Jake Arreita and Hector Rondon.
Ed Delahanty's Lineage
Ed Delahanty died on 7/2/1903, when a conductor kicked him out of a train near Niagara Falls (probably for his lack of mustache) and he somehow got swept over the falls to his death. As sad as that story is, his untimely demise enabled me to draft as his descendant HOF'er Tony Lazzeri, who was born on 12/6/1903. I selected 1930 Lazzeri and his powerful Yankees Murderer's Row teammates Lou Gehrig and Bill Dickey.
Billy Hamilton's Lineage
Billy Hamilton aka "Sliding Billy" or "Clean Shaven Billy" died on 12/15/1940, still believing that he would always be baseball's stolen base king. His descendant is Dean Chance, born 6/1/1941. I drafted 1964 Chance, his Cy Young campaign, and grabbed Angels teammates Bob Lee and Tony Satriano, who will be the designated clubhouse pasta chef.
My Lineage
I was born on 11/22/1978 in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania - the son, grandson, great-grandson, nephew, and grand-nephew of a multitude of coal miners and steelworkers. I knew at an early age that I wanted to wear a suit and tie to work instead of a hard hat. I chose Joe Gordon as my descendant. Gordon died 4/14/1978, narrowly escaping one final tax day by a few hours. I drafted 1941 Gordon, and chose his Yankees teammates Norm Branch and Frenchy Bordagarey.
2021/22 Player
As tempted as I was to reconfigure again and fit in Don Sutton's career season, I decided to go with Doug Jones, who passed away on my birthday last year, 11/22/2021. I drafted Jones' 1992 season to fill out my roster.
Final Tally
My final salary is $139,805,347. I left $194,653 on the table. I drafted 7294 PA and 1,558 IP.
