I took a great recruit 4 seasons ago with a WE of 1. He graduated lower than when he started. Not much lower but no overall gains. He would gain some during the season and then go off a party in Cancun or something and came back worse than before. I won't do a WE of 1 again. Although he did get Freshman of the year his first year.
this is the 1 WE experience.
basically, only ever recruit a 1 WE guy if you are happy to have him at his current ratings for 4 seasons. note that his IQ growth will be crummy, too.
the old forum fact was that newer coaches should just filter off all recruits with WE under 20, some folks even advised 30. this got outdated fast, potential came out, work ethic's role diminished. i used to adhere to that rule basically like it was a golden rule, not because i was new or cared about guardrails for new folks, but because low WE guys were just crap back then.
nowadays, i will occasionally recruit guys as low as that 8-12 range. you have to basically though, either be happy with their current ratings for 4 years, OR start them for their first probably 3 seasons, to have a chance to get solid growth. those few work ethic make a huge difference, a 1 WE guy basically never will grow. but you can take a guy who is like 12 and he'll grow like 12->15->19->24 to start senior year, if he starts 3 seasons, or something in that ballpark.
