What you suggest has some merit (even though the way you say it isn't necessarily persuasive). Certain players could be automatically elected: 700+ homers, 3000+ hits, a dozen All-Star selections, 3+ MVPs or CYAs, 280+ wins, etc. Then we could vote on the rest, some of whom are also deserving.
