Redshirting "Wants to Play" Topic

I tried to inform a JUCO with a "wants to play" preference of a redshirt and all my progress immediately went down to 0%. It's as if I'm dead to him. If I do want him (assuming I'm the only interested party), will I be able to get him back with lots of effort-- without withdrawing the redshirt-- or will it require withdrawing the redshirt. Will withdrawing the redshirt even be enough to allow me to begin building interest again?

Word of advice: Never ever use inform of redshirt during recruiting whether it's Juco or HS. Your best bet is to just wait until they're signed and on campus and then take your chances with the RS.

To answer your other questions I'm not exactly sure on the numbers but if memory serves removing the inform of redshirt will help a little bit but won't get you back to where you were.

i disagree strongly. inform redshirt on JUCOs is usually the only way they will take it, and is a very valuable tool. inform on freshman is also something i've used a lot, but much less in today's d1 because its just too damn competitive, and because i often have too much walkon wise to take a redshirt anyway. i imagine this is still a valuable tool for a bunch of situations, though?

however, you have to expect a good -5 HV or so effort wise, and put this effort on before the redshirt processes (you can do it in the same cycle). i think OP can get the guy back but i'm not really sure, i just don't have experience ******* off players in this manner in 3.0. how much effort did you have in before the redshirt? removing the redshirt inform should generate some positive effort and might get you back able to do stuff, i would start with that.

did you have any promises on before the redshirt? because if so, the redshirt inform is like, a huge negative, because you are also breaking those promises in the process. if not, i would think taking off the inform would get you back in it? but again, i'm really not sure, i just don't have any experience with this in 3.0.

I removed the redshirt inform and it definitely helped, but each AP, HV, CV is probably about 1/2 as valuable as before-- even after removing the redshirt inform.

It's interesting because I assumed that keeping the redshirt inform would be similar to having any other "very bad" preference, but it is definitely significantly worse than having a very bad "close to home" preference. I assume I would have been able to rebuild interest with the recruit, even while keeping the redshirt inform on, but that it would have been so slow I would basically have to hope noone else ever got interersted in him.

I think the JUCO redshirt inform is a good thing, from my limited experience, but I will most likely never inform a "want to play" of a redshirt ever again. And would likely never inform freshman of a redshirt, and only a JUCO if there is no competition.

pulling a scholarship and informing of a redshirt work pretty differently than preferences - i would not really try to compare the two. its possible both sets of effects are at play here, though. in general, pulling a scholarship and informing of redshirt turn heavily on the recruit's level relative to the school (this has been this way longer than i've been here, so way longer than 3.0 / preferences existed). a recruit who is 'above' or 'way above' a school will generate a significant negative on either inform of redshirt, or on pulling a scholarship. at least some 'way above' players will not, under any circumstance, accept an inform of redshirt. its possible that is at play here. you are a d3 school i guess, how high up was the player? definitely some d1 jucos will be 'way above' you enough to be extremely adverse to the inform.

i have only tried to redshirt 1 guy with that preference that i can recall, and it was absolutely no issue. i am not really sure how much of what is going on here is preferences, versus the longer standing inform and pulling scholarship stuff, but i think at least a big part of what you are experiencing is not related to preferences?

what is interesting to me is that your effort is now lessened on an incremental basis, even after pulling the inform. that doesn't fit what i would expect. what i would expect is a substantial negative than can only be partially ofset by re-offering the ship or pulling the inform, but no impact on incremental effort thereafter. perhaps that is where preferences are kicking in, but if so, i would think pulling the inform SHOULD have cancelled that out. couple questions. one, how sure are you that incremental effort is now about half the old impact? two, did you have any promise on prior to the redshirt? three, what did the wants to play preference show with the inform on, and what does it show now?

there's been long standing issues relating to this sort of thing you are talking about, what i suspect is that there's probably something not right with the way some of these effects are unwound after undoing the action (inform or pulling a scholarship), where a full understanding of preferences + the normal inform / pull scholarship mechanic, would not give a full picture. too many weird stories from too many people. i advise caution in drawing global conclusions from your situation here.

The reason I brought up preferences was when I did have the redshirt offered, my team rating on the player's "want to play" preference was "very bad." I thought that would be the extent of the damage, but obviously not, because everything got zeroed out. After pulling the redshirt inform, I'm able to make progress and my team rating on the "wants to play" preference is back to "neutral." I know from previous experience pulling a scholarship, it was ABSOLUTELY impossible trying to get him back. Nothing had any effect whatsoever and I was stuck on 0%. I'm happy I at least have a chance after pulling the redshirt inform.

1) the half impact is an estimate, but I am basing it on how many percentage points each AP put me toward the ability to offer a CV before the redshirt inform, and after the redshirt inform was taken away
2) I had no promises on the recruit.
3) the preference was "very bad" with the redshrit inform and is now "neutral" without it
