It’s still dice roll dynasty. Recruiting is completely up to chance, and one bad sim can ruin a year of team building, but that’s what we pay for, right?
Snafu has been through the wringer with poor roll luck recently, so I don’t wanna ignore that rolls can be brutal, but maybe to put a positive spin on them.
There’s a reason the cream always rises to the top. The best coaches take rolls into account AND manage them. They don’t just play for good luck but to mitigate bad luck. Chapelhill, baums, and bigtuna consistently are top teams in the most stacked D1 world currently with low baseline prestige teams (for Chapel and bigtuna, the lowest possible baseline). And that’s not just recruiting rolls - they’re managing EE rolls, game sim luck, and seeding odds.
Something a lot of people try to do in HD, seemingly, is play how they want the game to be rather than play the game how it is designed. Top coaches divert in recruiting, force 100/0 battles, etc. while avoiding multiple battles in a cycle or 3+ team battles. I’ve noticed it in other pro gaming - contending players will complain about the games being **** while top pros adjust how they play.
Can rolls be really lame? Sometimes, sure. But there’s ways to maneuver around them and they won’t be the reason a dynasty doesn’t come to fruition.
Really great post.
And that isn't to say complaints aren't valid. People have their preferences, we like what we like. I complain about things, and **** off if you tell me to stop. But at the end of the day, if I want to win a game, and I know slowdown is overpowered and uptempo/depth is nerfed, and the top of my roster is stronger and so it is the much better option, if I don't choose to exploit that, it's on me. Yeah the game is imbalanced, and those game engine problems cause a lot of other problems (including recruiting issues) so I'll keep talking about them. But I complain about those problems - which up until they fixed it, included the stupidly long wait to get to D1 - because the base game is good and worth growing and improving. 20th century game engine code isn't going to cut it. :)
