If a recruit is considering no one else, how likely is it that telling them you plan to redshirt them a problem? I don’t want to miss out on a guy because I tell him that (or do it), but I also really would prefer to redshirt this player.

There is really no benefit to telling a player ahead of time that you plan on redshirting him. From what I've learned from others here, only bad things can come from that. So don't tell him, but go ahead and redshirt him when the time comes. Freshmen are pretty much always good with that.

The better the player and the lesser your team, the greater the possibility he won't like the RS. No prob, if he complains just take it off and he'll be fine. The lesser the player and the better your team, the more likely he is to be okay with the RS. I never tell them in advance that I'm gonna RS them, it only makes things more difficult.

I haven’t done this… but some coaches say if you inform of RS the same cycle as a bunch of HV, and/or a CV, it goes smoothly with the recruit accepting it.

Just tried this yesterday and it worked like a charm.

couple things:

1) "There is really no benefit to telling a player ahead of time that you plan on redshirting him. From what I've learned from others here, only bad things can come from that" - this is incorrect. by informing of redshirt, you get 100% chance of the player accepting the redshirt

2) "but some coaches say if you inform of RS the same cycle as a bunch of HV, and/or a CV, it goes smoothly with the recruit accepting it" - this is not incorrect, but does not represent a complete understanding, either. doing the redshirt in the same cycle or not, has nothing to do with it. the point is, the inform redshirt is a substantial negative. as correctly stated by stillwaters - "The better the player and the lesser your team, the greater the possibility he won't like the RS... The lesser the player and the better your team, the more likely he is to be okay with the RS".

in short, comparing the player to the team gives the amount of negative value the inform of redshirt will generate. note that goodness of the player is actually, 'goodness of the player as ranked by the incredibly ****** player position ratings'. and 'the lesser your team' just means prestige and division. pulling a scholarship works the exact same way, and this same factor is a major factor in how much effort is required to unlock, and so forth.

anyway, as long as you have enough extra positive effort on a player, you will be able to withstand the negative value of the inform. there is nothing special about doing it in the same cycle, except, that you CAN do it in the same cycle, because the inform of redshirt (or withdrawal of scholarship offer) is processed last, after all the effort (otherwise you would need a cycle of buffer). it does make sense to do these extra hvs and stuff in the same cycle as the inform, because you generally don't go throwing 5 extra HVs on players just for the heck of it, and then have that effort lying around for you to use against the inform.

make sense?

Yes it does. Thanks everyone! I had someone who was one of the last recruits I wanted and I only wanted him if he’d redshirt. I offered a scholarship and a redshirt at the same time. He had no other scholarship offers. I disappeared from his “Considering” list completely. Whatever. If he wasn’t going to redshirt, I didn’t want him anyway. And I looked him up and no one offered him a scholarship. So….

most players you are recruiting in d3/d2 are 'far' above your program, in their eyes. so almost all the players down there require some extra positive effort, a few HVs or something, to tolerate the inform.

in d1 it is more likely to see the recruiting way down case, when an A prestige d1 program recruits a crappy backup option with no stars, THEN you can find player where the negative off the inform is 0. or exceedingly close to 0, low enough that you don't have to do any effort except the 30 AP to unlock and the scholarship, or whatever.

but basically, you probably just needed to do a few HV before that inform (or at the same time - same cycle effort happens before the inform is processed), and you'd have been fine. if you are recruiting a d2 player in d2 this isn't necessarily the case, but generally all non-rookie d2/d3 coaches are getting most of their recruits from a higher division, where the players will look down on you, so to speak, and you at least need to do some HVs to have a shot on that inform.

I could write so much about what I learned from recruiting this first “year”. I might in the next few weeks sometime. Very interesting. I did “fine” but will do so much better in the future.

This post has a rating of , which is below the default threshold.
I had read enough here to have some ideas, but I still didn’t realize everything I could have. In the end I got two walkons with the theory I will outrecruit them next year and two walk ons aren’t too bad. Last year I only played ten guys consistently anyway. I should be much better this year to last year- though I’ll still be pretty mediocre.

Welcome, John!

You’re asking great questions to start out… a sign of good things to come.
