“May Sign If The Deal Is Right” Topic

I’ve got the 33rd pick in what seems to be a pretty good draft. Then again, I’m running 15-0 in scouting. I’d like to pass the pick until next year, when I’ll have $20M in HS scouting. Easy, right? Pick somebody who “probably won’t sign.”

The problem is, I’ve already gone all in on IFAs, and only have $2M left to spend on the draft.

I think one of the “probably won’t sign” guys will ask for more than my $2M budget. What about the “may sign if the deal is right” guys who want to do college basket-weaving, or whatever? How much more should I expect them to ask above my $1M slot? And assuming I meet that first demand but not the next one, how likely are they to sign the initial offer?

I also have the #35 pick in a Type A comp, which I obviously do want to use. Should I just stop being greedy and sign someone at slot with both picks, or is there a way to massage this?

No, you have to find a player who probably won't sign, and his consultant is his mother. Those are the only guys who will likely not sign. But the problem is, your $2M budget is probably not enough to even send those guys an offer for what they are asking for. Most of them ask for more than that. So you mission is to find a mamma's boy who wants less than $2M.

You don't get compensation if a Type A or B don't sign

Do you have any room in the payroll or coaches budget to transfer funds to prospects? That might help.

Nah, I’m tapped out.

One of my Type A guys who was “may sign if the deal is right” has turned me down. What’s the best way to handle him from here?

Wait, wait. When you say "Type A guys" are you saying that the pick you have (#33) is actually in the sandwich round and not the first round (could be either if a team or two didn't sign their pick last year)? You don't get comp picks for not signing your sandwich round picks, you'll just lose the pick.

Unfortunately you are out of luck if they were a Type A. For your first round guy that wasn't a comp pick 'may sign if the deal is right' may turn you down, at which point do nothing and you'll get the pick next year.

Important lesson though, for comp pick guys I always go 'Very conservative' So I don't lose the pick.

Oh, yeah, I know there’s no compensation for Type A’s who refuse. But I know I’ve read some guys who are able to keep offering players and they’ll eventually agree. Is that not a thing?

@Lobo - The player refused your offer outright. If you go to the draft screen you'll see a red X next to him. You can't make any more offers from this screen.

Did you KEEP the refusal message from the player/agent in your INBOX? That is now the only link you have to re-offer a contract. Yes you can do it as many times as you want, might take five, ten, twenty times, who knows? He's a "may sign" so I would think there's a decent chance he'll sign eventually.

Thanks damag, yes, I have the original message. Will keep trying him. No point in offering more money than he's asking for, right?

No point. If I read you correctly, he flat turned down your last offer. So just keep re-offering the same until he comes back with a counter offer.
