The Bid To Draft league will be a 20 team single season progressive starting play in 1970. The league will start from scratch - no keepers prior to the first draft. Pretty straightforward so far.

Here's the unique feature of the league: You bid for your draft position.

Each franchise has 250 units at their disposal to use for bidding on draft positions. Each round will have a minimum bid amount. The amount you bid for a draft spot will transfer to the player drafted in that spot and becomes his "salary".

Example: Team A bids 30 units in round 1. Team A drafts Bob Gibson. Gibson now has a "salary" of 30 until he retires or gets cut.

You will place multiple bids at the same time. Example: Each franchise will be asked for 3 bids. Those 3 bids will be ranked highest to lowest and that will be the order of the draft for the first 3 Rounds. Tie bids will be broken by a random number generator - think coin toss. The next step in the draft will be 4 rounds of bids, etc, until 25 rounds are complete.

You can bid any amount you want on any round. However, you must have enough units left to satisfy the minimum bid amount and to finish out your team.

Simplified Draft Example: Team A bids 30, Team B bids 25, Team C bids 35. The draft order would be Team C, Team A and then Team B.

More complicated Draft Example: Team A bids 30, 30 and 30. Team B bids 35, 30 and 25. Team C bids 40, 40 and 40.

The draft order would be: Team C, Team C, Team C, Team B, Tiebreaker for all of the bids at 30, then Team B with the 25 bid.

Your bidding strategy will determine where your picks are going to fall in the draft order.

Minimum bids per round:

Round 1: 25
Rounds 2: 20
Rounds 3 & 4: 15
Rounds 5 - 10: 10
Rounds 11 - 15: 5
Rounds 16-20: 3
Rounds 21-25: 1

This totals 180 units. You will have 70 units to disperse how you see fit.

Other rules:

Draft order - will be determined by bid each season
DH - no DH until 1973, then the DH will be adopted in both leagues
I/R - unlimited I/R players, these players salaries will not count towards the 250 unit maximum
AAA - no drafted AAA, you will get 4 & 2 WIS AAA players of below average quality
Trades - players and picks can be traded up to 2 seasons in advance of the current season of play
Vetoes - require 12 votes
Keepers - you may keep up to 25 players subject to a 250 unit maximum
League alignment - the initial alignment will be random. Every 5 seasons the league will randomly realign.
Interleague play - yes

So basically the first go around of bids will determine draft order for the first 60 picks and if you bid high enough you might get 2 or even 3 picks in the first round while someone else who bids low might not get any picks in round 1 or 2. Then obviously the former would have relatively few bid points going forward whereas the latter would have a lot of remaining bid points…..am I understanding correctly?

another question……are the other bids submitted privately via sitemail or are we bidding auction style in the forums?

Question 1 - yes, you are correct, that's the integral part of the strategy for this league.

Question 2 - the bids will be sent to me privately. I will send my bids to two other owners privately. I will rank them all and display them as results.

What about draft in year two of the league?
If I keep 15 players totaling 150 points in player value, then I need 10 more picks. I will not have enough points left to make minimum bids in rounds 1-10 of that draft.

Also, I assume traded players maintain their point value on the new team and that trade can not result in any team going over 250 points limit.

Your assessment of future drafts is correct. Once again, an important strategy component of the league.

A player's salary sticks with them unless they are cut or retire.
