Early Entry Question Topic

Ok guys - I'm getting different answers from many people on this subject and since both of my teams are in this position I'm curious to find out what is true.

If you have 6 or more available scholarships available is it true that you won't have any early entries?

AFAIK, no. You still can have EE's. It depends on WHO is in the 6 leaving. If it's 6 seniors (I'm not sure 1 yr transfers count), you will keep all potential EEs. If you have, say, 4 seniors and 2 walkons, you can have 2 EE's.

That's how it's been explained to me previously.

that's correct, 1yr transfers and walkons don't count. you can't have more than 6 graduating players (who were on the team at least 2 seasons) and EEs combined.

Wait, whut?
If you have 6 legit seniors, then you won't have an EE's?

that is correct

a couple years ago, I did a manuver that really pleased me. I had 5 juniors. I also had a couple of sophs that I was concerned could leave the next season. I had 2 or 3 seniors, including one guy who was meh - not that great - somewhat useful but easily replaced.

SO, I redshirted the meh senior and then the next season, I had six guys graduating - and neither of the possible EEs could leave.......this was a rare convergence of factors but so cool

Worked out as I had 2 for sure EE's and they both stayed.

I think because its a pretty hard thing to maximize. First, you have to have a full class of 6 and none of them can be an EE in their career, and then you have to have EE type players waiting in the wing. There a couple maneuvers if you are close (RS a senior the season before, or add a JUCO to the big class when they are juniors) but the whole thing takes a combination of alot of luck and planning. I rarely have classes of 6 so that kicks me out. I can think of exactly 1 time in my career were I got to take advantage of this (and that's only because I took over a STACKED chapel team). Maybe if I could recruit like him it would happen more :)

Yeah, it's almost never worth it to try to work it like this from the start of a class. But sometimes it can be worth it redshirt a guy down, or sign a cheap juco a couple years in advance, when you're in that situation organically. But then you're still hoping nobody in the big class leaves. And then for the guys who were protected, you do get a guaranteed no EE year - but that's with a class of 6 first year players, so buyer beware. It's not all that great, really.

i have never found much room for gaming this myself. i have randomly gotten into a situation where it was relevant, but i never felt it really saved me an expected EE. definitely a couple times i would have 4 or 5 guys graduating and would be protected from the really unlucky scenarios. like having a low jr and low soph on the board with 5 graduating, where maybe 4% of the time both would declare. or having 4 leaving with 4 guys on the board, where you need to get pretty unlucky to lose more than 2 but its certainly possible.

i'm sure others have been saved expected EEs but it feels pretty hard to game. its good to keep in mind though for when it comes up. i have occasionally also used it in recruiting, like against a team with 5 leaving and a few big boards, i knew they were capped at 1 EE so the RS2 guy they were on, could only get 1 EE of late money. not sure that knowledge mattered or helped me in any way but i definitely thought about it once or twice?

Is there a designated total number of players who declare to EE in a season? Or average?

There is not a designated number of EEs each season. I dont know an average either and that would probably be misleading and the number can change pretty drastically based on each season's big board. If you are interested in how it works, how to project how likely your player(s) is/are to leave, and how to use this information to your advantage, I highly recommend this video and file from cubcub and post from billg. Managing EEs well can be a real differentiator in D1.
