If a have a guy clear waivers that has atleast 5 years of ML experience and he chooses to become a FA if I demote him, am I responsible for all but the min. of his contract is does it work as if he was claimed off waivers?

I believe that him "choosing to become a free agent" actually means he is refusing to accept a minor league assignment. Your only option is to release him, in which case you are responsible for all of his contract.

No I wouldn't either with my new found knowledge. It looks like he is going to be big leaguer for me this year as he is making 6.6M. Good knews is his vsR is 99.

It's very, very rare but it does happen. It happened one time for me.

tec, you were responsible for his contract still? or did you just keep him? were you given an option or did he just immediately become a free agent?

He stayed on the unassigned list. I can't remember who it was or what I finally did with him. I'm thinking he may have ended up getting reassigned back to the ML roster when an injury opened up a roster spot.
