Promised minutes: Topic

I have 10 minutes promised to a Freshman PG. It helped me get him in recruiting but later in the signing period I got 2 other Freshman PG's who are better than he is overall.
If he plays less than 10 minutes in one game will he threaten to transfer or is this based more on a 10 minute per game average?

10 minute average, jeremy. In future recruiting, try to avoid the promise, unless you will WANT to play the player that much. If you have to promise simply to get the player, it tends to hurt your coaching options. Promises aren't worth that much recruiting value, and they're not worth using simply to win the battle, unless it's a must-have player. And at D3 and D2, there are almost always several other options. So if you get in a battle, just go find another option that is just as good. Good luck with the player.

Thanks. All 3 of the frosh PG's are getting at least 8 minutes per game in playing time and the one with the promise is getting about 13 minutes a game.
The silver lining is that the one with promised minutes is the best passer of the 3.

You could probably get away with a little less than 10 if needed (anything over 8 and you would likely be fine) for that PG.

I tend to agree with jskinner in that promises tend to be a pain in the rear unless you're certain that you can meet it. I usually only like to offer them if I know a guy is going to have a defined role-- if they're definitely going to be a backup then 10 is fine; if they're going to start then 15.

Yeah I try to avoid then unless I know I want to start the guy or he is going to be my 3rd guard or something where I know he is going to get the minutes.

Next year the promise will be easier to meet as a SF starter is graduating and one player that is currently playing SG will be moving back to SF opening a spot at SG for some minutes for one of the 3 PG's.

Be aware that promises are only valid for a player's first season. After that, all bets are off.

Thanks for the info.

Generally you're safe if you play him about 80% of the minutes promised. He'll also give you a warning or 2 in messages if he's not happy with the playing time.

I promised a PG recruit 15 min. by accident, who I planned on redshirting. I redshirted him anyways and he took the RS with no problem.

On another note. You need faster pg's. He is a little slow.

Covey is a little slow but at the time I made the promise he was literally the only decent point guard in my region who would even acknowledge my calls.
Coleman and Davis are better than he is long term except for passing we can all agree on that.
