I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on pitchers' pitch ratings vs their splits. I generally don't consider a pitcher with splits below 70 to be MLB worthy, but I've been seeing some successful pitchers with splits in the 60's or below. Does anyone out there have a guideline for how to evaulate pitches vs splits?

A) You're going to play hell building a staff of 70+ splits

B) A pitch over 80 and a pitch over 75 will cover up some lower splits

C) A good defense will fix a lot of things including pitches/splits

I probably value pitches less than anybody I know. Keeping that in mind:

A) Splits are way more important than pitches

B) Very high control covers low splits

C) "A good defense will fix a lot of things including pitches/splits."

I prefer good splits over good pitches, but the best pitchers, Have at least one dominat thing, ( control, splits or pitches) as long as you have one dominat rating and at least solid in the rest the will be good, multiple dominant to very good catagories equal all-star types

I'm still pretty new, but...what definitely made a difference for me pitching-wise was:

A) Control covers low splits.

B) High pitch quality (stuff) covers low splits

C) "A good defense will fix a lot of things including pitches/splits."

D) A high PC C (i.e. 86 v. 51) seems to make a difference too (did for me).

Bottom line is they all play together...or so it seems to me...but what do I know?

Im huge on control and splits.

On my team that is currently up 4 games in division through about 110 games has an average control of 82, VS L of 80, and VS R of 77. The low contorl is 79, VS L is 75, and VS R is 69.

My team also has the best defense by far in the entire league.

I find you have to be a little flexible. Not everyone is going to have everything going for him (control, splits, pitch quality, GB, velocity), but I tried to have a good mix and minimize the weak spots.

My current staff has:

-- 11 of 12 pitchers with control of 79 or better

-- 9 of 12 pitchers with both vL and vR over 60 (the others have vL or 59, 59 and 55)

-- 12 of 12 pitchers with P1 over 70, 7 of 12 with P2 over 70

I also tried to get rid of pitchers who were soft-tossers, so 9 of 12 now have VE of 75 or better. That adds to the Ks, and can make up for some deficiencies. Nine of 12 pitchers have a GB of 60 or better, which also helps.

I used to be almost exclusively about splits, but Sam Stewart and his Cy Young award with a 59 vs R has got me leaning more towards pitches now.

A.) I feel 90+ control and pitches 1: 90+ 2: 75 3: 70 will cover splits as low as 60-65.

B.) Lower control say 70 with 80/80+ Splits with 210+ first 3 pitches will be pretty good.

C.) I too agree that great defense will fix most low pitch/splits problems.
