does AI d2 work just like d1, so if a player ends up over 2.7 GPA he returns for a 5th season or do all of them leave after 4 (3 eligible) seasons?

There is no 2.7 gpa rule in DII. Player must be above 2.0 and gets 4 years of eligibility so almost all stay for a 5th season if over 2.0.

No, it's different. At D2, after they sit out a season they get 4 seasons of play. They just need to be above 2.0 cumulative to stay eligible.
