What do I do with this pitcher Topic

I just drafted this guy and I'm not sure what role to use him in when he gets to the majors. He projects to 31/78 stam/dur and 93/93/97 control/splits with 90/82 pitches. Is that stamina high enough to be a 2 inning closer or will he just get a lot of 1.2 IP? If I made him my closer I feel like he'd always be at 100% with that stam/dur combo.

If he hits those proj., I'd have him as setup A and let him log 150+ late-inning IP.

You don't want to start this guy? Looks like "staff ace" to me. He should be good for 100-120 pitches every fifth day.

31 Stamina
78 Durability

Starter? Uh, no. Not unless there's been a change in the Sim's fatigue calculations...

ditto on zbrent's assessment

I'd let him close and let him come in before the 9th inning. He might get more innings as a setup guy but he'll get more important innings as a closer, and with his stamina and durability he can pitch 2 innings nearly every night out.

And the "Mr Magic Closer Myth" persists...

I'd rather use him as SU where he'll pitch high-leverage innings in a tie game more often than wasting him with a 3-run lead to get cheap saves.

I'm inclined to look at a pitcher with projections like these as a future stud setup man, but we're really putting the cart before the horse here. He probably has a couple of seasons or more before he's reasonably close to his projections and we don't know who else will be in your ML bullpen when he gets to the bigs. He might end up being your best option as closer.

While he's in the minors, however, I'd definitely have him setting up. He'll get more innings in that role and more innings plus good coaches give him the best chance to improve as quickly as possible.

I'd set him to close and come in no later than the 8th, possibly even the 7th.

Some depends on his age. If he's 18, he might not ever reach his projections, and may end up a SetupB type.

If he's 22, and he's already pretty close to his projections, he'll end up at SetupA with a 30 pitch limit, and inning available in the 8th. Put all your other short relievers at SetupB with pull settings of 4 or 5, and inning available at 6. He'll get a ton of innings for you, much more than he would as a closer.
