Low Patience Superstars Topic

So what is the best way to keep a low patience superstar for the longest possible time? I have a guy like this headed into arb for the first time, but it would also be nice to know how to handle these guys in general. Is it a done deal now that a low patience superstar will go free agent at the end of his first five year contract? Would it be wise to arb him for a year and then sign him for the five years? Or is there a better chance that he will re-up at the end of the five if you extend him long term in his first arb year?

I ignore patience. First year of arb I give him what he wants, usually 1-2 mil. Then in year 2 if the LT is less per year than the 1 yr, I'll sign him LT, otherwise I give him what he wants for 1 yr. Then in yr3 I'll sign him long term. Its not worth saving a few hundred k in arb years 1 nad 2 to risk any good player, regardless of their patience rating, refuse to sign a long term deal down the line.

If he's a superstar, wouldn't you sign him for 5 years every chance you got?

No, you sign him in the third arb year regardless of the cost of the second arb year. The question is how to keep him the longest, not how to keep him cheapest for 1 less year.

The rationale would be that he might refuse to re-sign at the end of the five year deal, because of the new connection between low patience and desire to test the open free agent market, and maybe arbing him for a year or two would tack a couple of years onto the front of the five-year deal.

The unknown for me is whether arbing him for a year or two would in turn make it less likely that he would sign another long term deal at the end of the first five year deal?

I'm always afraid that he'll refuse to sign a long term contract during Arb3... menaing you only get him for 1 more season. For guys I absolutely have to keep, I'll give up their Arb3 season and sign them to a 5-year contract at Arb2.

I'll trade 1 for the chance to lose 4.

Sounds like I don't know all of the details to arb vs re-signing.

I was under the impression that if you offered what they want the first 2 arb years that they would sign long term in the third no matter what. Is that wrong?

I have no idea, to be honest. I just don't want to find out the hard way!

I've yet to hear of a player refusing a 5 year deal going into arb3.

Arb twice and sign to 5.
