Would you sign this guy LT? Topic

We are about to rollover and I have a pitcher I need to make a decision on. Since I traded for Artie Silva, http://www.whatifsports.com/?pid=1050283, 3 seasons ago, he has gone 31-17 for my team, which is exactly at .500 over that span. He has given up less than a hit an IP(466.2 IP/454 Hits). He has K'd 379 while walking only 204. His ERA for me is 4.18. He is asking $4M arb and $4.2/3 yrs LT. He is 30 yrs old. Downside is his CTRL is 50, vRH is 59, and GB/FB is 52. However, to this poit, these low ratings have not affected his performance for me. Funny that he was arbed once by the team that traded him to me, and twice by me so far, so this is his 4th arb. Also, obvoiusly the last arb for me, so if I don't sign him LT now, pretty sure he'll go FA after this year. Would you take the chance that he will continue his very good run for me for another 3 seasons, or just arb him the last time and let him go at the end of the year?

Links are not working.

What is his current overall rating? I only ask for potential A or B.
10/24/2009 11:49 AM
His OVR is 67. Not a Type A. Maybe B. I don't know why the links aren't working, but we haven't rolled over yet, so maybe that's why. You can view league Mattingly, team Toronto Titwillows.

I don't see it on the World list. You sure it hasn't rolled?

If the world is moving to next season and is not public we cannot view the world via the world page. I would bet the chance of a 67 being a type B is somewhere near 1% or less.

You know, forget the links. Based on the information here, I'd give him the contract. $4.2m is cheap for a reliable starter ... In 2-3 seasons, he's proven himself in your stadium against the competition level Mattingly provides. Even though his splits and control aren't great (health? makeup?), I'd lean toward keeping him.

His Health is 94 and Makeup is 72. Never been on the DL. He actually went up a point in OVR at age 30 and his #1 pitch went from 96 to 98. I tend to agree with you. He's proven himself, and a 3 year contract would only make him 33. Plus it's only slightly more than what he is asking in arb for this season.

I'd sign it. 4.2 a mil is worth a 4.5 era on a bad year.

Well aren't you special.

This guy is average at best (his career averages, 4.52 ERA 1.46 WHIP are pretty much middle of the road benchmarks). I'd be surprised if you couldn't come up with something better.

A lot of times you can score really solid veteran (ie: old) pitchers for much less than that on one year deals late in free agency. I'd go that route before tying up dollars on a multi-year deal with a mediocre pitcher like that.

Alternately, if you really need him in that slot and don't see viable options right now, sign him for the one year arb deal and see if his performance holds up.

thats not awful, and he was actually comparing the walks to his strikeouts, theguy has an almost 2 to 1 ratio, which is not bad at all.
