Team Option question Topic

If I decline a team option, can I still negotiate with the player during re-signing of my own free agents?

Thanks

i would think that declining a team option is the same as releasing him, but i may be wrong

You can decline the option and then re-sign. Sometimes for a lot less money.

Right. Sometimes for less, sometimes for more. Keep in mind that if he plays a position in demand by owners (maybe SS, CF, 3B?), competitive bidding might send his salary to wacky territory.

I think you can re-sign them during the exclusive FA period.

That's right. I was thinking more about declining an option, seeing his price is still too high, then deciding to wait till it comes down.

Thanks for the replies. I saved about $3M on his contract

Is this factoring in the 25% buyout fee? If not, how much did that cost you?

If you're talking about Daniel Towers, the $1.875 buyout was a good idea but given his season last season and the drastic ratings decline I'm not so sure you want him back at any price.

I've got to agree. By my math, you saved $625k this season ($7.5M - ($1.875 buyout + $5.0M new contract)), but locked yourself into $4.9M next season and $4.6M the season after that one. At least it's not an escalating contract, but with his incresingly rapid decline, I would probably have just paid the small extra $ this season and then let him walk (assuming no one would trade for him).

Ugh. I posted the link an hour before the new contract was signed. No meaningful savings and money tossed down the drain for two more seasons. We've all learned lessons the hard way... this is bfkfraser's turn.
