Is it possible to offer a contract to a player who opts out of his mutual option before he hits the open market as a FA? I've yet to have that happen on a player I had any interest in keeping.

Yes, I believe they show up as FAs... but in my experience, the ones that do this are the Type As who don't want to negotiate, anyway.

Thanks iain. I acquired a really good SP in a trade 3 seasons ago who had foolishly gotten a 5th year option. I would love to hang onto him, but doubt I can fit him in if he hits the open market. It sure would be nice to be able to at least offer contract extensions.

On multiple occasions, I have seen older players in decline opt out of their final season and then re-sign with the same team for less money.
