m2m def vet needed Topic

just took over a man 2 man defensive team......
what skills are most important when recruiting for this defense?
i'm sure this has been asked before but i couldn't find a recent post....thanks for the help

Ath/Spd and Def if you are focusing solely on the defensive ability of your team.

Defensive rating is indeed critical in a man to man.
Ath/Spd and Blocking ability are also key.

thank you for the good advice both of you.....anything else i need to know with man 2 man........positioning? any different then the other defenses?

I personally believe ATH is more important than SPD for a great M2M defensive player. Also, don't ignore SB, even on your guards it matters.

In terms of positioning, nothing major. Just if you're going to play a minus defense you need guards with high ath/spd. Vice versa if you play plus. But those are really true no matter what defense you play.

The only caveat I'd offer is that you're recruiting at DIII, I honestly wouldn't even look at shot blocking for guards. There are way too many other holes to worry about filling at that level ... if you're focusing at all on that, you're giving up something in a more important area. (I don't even look at bl for guards at DI.)

My tip as a long time M2M coach, M2M is the best defense for guarding against the 3. Except for maybe the 3-2 zone, but even then, I think its close.

Man defenses really really benefit from good speed. I think speed and def rating are the two most important for holding teams to a low FG%. Ath & Blk help for bigs, but really speed and def will generate a ton of steals and not too many fouls like a press.
