veteran won’t acccept demotion Topic

I have a veteran on my team with 1 year on his contract and I'm trying to demote him to AAA but he says he will become a free agent if I do. I expect I'll have to pay him for his final year I release him and he becomes a FA- correct?
Thanks.

Correct. Unless another team signs him, in which case they will pay him $327k and you'll pay the difference.

Are you sure about that tec? I thought that if the player refused to accept a demotion (after clearing waivers etc), you wouldnt be responsible for the remaining salary.

I had a guy a little while ago in this same situation, I let him walk, and I am still paying him...

I was under the same impression as dherz.

He doesn't really "leave as a free agent". You're forced to either keep him on your major league roster or release him. A release is a release . . . you're paying him.

Tec is right. If he is out of options and refuses demotion then your choices are to either keep him on your team or release him. When you release someone, you still pay them at least until somebody else signs them.

I had the same situation. I designated the guy for assignment (waived him I believe-no claims), then was able to demote.
