When I first discovered FreeHD, I had read parts of the coaches guide and chose the highest prestige team I could find. I also avoided schools with a lot of scholarships.

I chose a B- rated Rhode Island team in Knight with 3 open scholly's. When I began recruiting, I actually spent some money on a top 25 rated D1 player! I wasted my money so fast, and I ended up with a couple of very mediocre players. I felt rotten that I had to take on a walk-on (how shameful!).

My first free hd team had three scholarships available. I read nothing and just jumped in. I signed no one, three walk-ons and a six win season....Then I started reading the threads and information that is so generously shared here and it has been much more enjoyable and an on going learning experience.

Edgewood (DIII, Naismith) - my first players ever recruited in HD - SG Jose Johnson and PG Alberto Kyle. Funny how I'll never forget that. Last I heard Alberto Kyle was flippin burgers at McD's.

Two Guards: Leaf and King. Leaf. Meh. He was a serviceable backup, King. . now King had his flaws, but he could shoot threes and was a hot streak scorer off the bench, so he wasn't a total loss. Ended up playing much more Small forward than guard.

I inherited an RIT team on the verge of greatness, promptly ignored the copious advice given to me by its previous coach, and ran it into the ground.

After eventually clawing my way to DII through sheer perseverance, I found myself at the helm of a Wayne St. team on the verge of greatness and... ran it into the ground.

6 Seasons later, I inherited the DI pre-season 1st team AA center... and kept him out of the NBA.

Turns out ath and spd play some sort of role in this game. Who knew? Probably the good citizens of Rochester, Wayne, and Annapolis, who rightfully shudder now at the very sound of my name.
