Recruiting Battle Case Analysis Topic

Like a few have already said, the CV is more effort than a HV which is more effort than an Eval. So depending on how his money was spent it could be more or less than double the effort. The 40 to 120 distance advantage can almost be ignored.

it really is too bad he didn't have the breakdown of recruiting efforts. He could maybe look thru his inbox and try to get a "guesstimate" for his actions. D vs. B-, that would be interesting to breakdown.

jdno, I do not know if there is a sliding scale or not but it seems at least reasonable to suppose that there might be as diminishing return is a common thread throughout this game. It will be interesting to see if the data collected will support such a hypothesis.

Here's another case to throw out there and let people feed on....

In Smith, I had four open schollies at B prestige S. Carolina in the SEC.....I had locked in 3 of the 4, feeling confident enough that no one else would come in on them to take my remaining $62K+ and go after a really big fish. I chose to test out a theory and go after a recruit that A+ Maryland was in on. I made this decision knowing that I could lose out, but after seeing so much discussion about how no one dares to take on an A+ D1 school anymore unless they're also an A school, I thought "WTH?"

I didn't just do it to do it, Maryland had 3 recruits considering him, for only 2 open slots, and the SEC had earned almost 3 times the xtra recruiting $$$ thanks to great NT performances.

Yes, he had an obvious distance advantage (the recruit was in PA) and a very obvious prestige advantage. So here is the end results for you all to chew over....

I did the following:

5 Evals
49 HV's
17 CV's
Guaranteed Start + 25 Minutes
Just over $62,000 spent on him

He did this:

25 Evals
15 HV's
6 CV's

NO Promises....

Spent around $14,000 on him

The only other things to keep in mind.....He was on him from Day 1, I didn't jump in until Day 3....the recruit's proximity indicator said he wanted to "Stay Close to Home"....

End result as far as I'm concerned.....unless you're an A school, you don't have a shot in hell against an A+ D1 school...which probably people assumed, but I think I've more or less proven here.....

Wow, how big was the distance advantage?
10/30/2009 12:56 PM
He was 500 miles away from me.....not sure about Maryland....probably no more than 150-200 depending on where in PA he was.....

NOTE: This is edited from earlier post after receiving the other coach's information.

I also have a recent story from Smith World.

I was recruiting for my Montana team which has a B- prestige. In the first cycle, I got a PG located 20 miles away to consider me. The only other school that he was considering was Washington, which was 390 miles away and has a B+ prestige. We were the only two schools that he considered throughout the recruiting process. Based on the messages I received, I believe that I was in the lead most of the way and finally signed him during the 11 a.m. cycle the morning after signings started.

I ended up spending just over $43k. This was broken down as follows: 76 home visits, 24 campus visits, 5 scouting trips, 36 calls to the player and 2 calls to the coach. I promised 15 minutes and was also listed as the Childhood Favorite.

The Washington coach spent just over $83k. This was how he spent his funds: 61 home visits, 12 campus visits, 40 scouting trips, 26 calls to the player, 17 calls to the coach and 17 letters. He also guaranteed 20 minutes and a start.

So, the major difference was the breakdown between home visits, campus visits and scouting trips. He used far more scouting visits (40 vs. 5), which had a corresponding impact on his use of home visits (where I was +15) and campus visits (+12).

This difference in mix (plus whatever value I got from being the Childhood Favorite) was able to overcome the 2/3 grade prestige disadvantage, the difference in guaranteed minutes (20 vs. 15), the difference in letters/calls and the guaranteed start.

If Washington had done the exact same activities that I had done, it would have cost them about $90k. So, they couldn't have matched it, but they could have altered their mix to come close. For example, if they cut the scouting visits from 40 to 5, they could have added 15 campus visits, 24 home visits, or some combination of the two.

Would that have been more effective?

good post pd, I guess that's the key question.

maddy, I'm really pretty surprised you didn't win that battle. Really surprised. Do you remember if the FSS ever gave an indication you were even close? Also, how soon after signings began did this kid sign with the other school? Just trying to gauge how close you were in this fight.

Let's look a bit closer at the Montana-Washington matchup.
Here roughly are the costs: Montana 152 - 303 - 802; Washington 533 - 750 - 1268.

Montana used 5 evaluations, 76 home visits, 24 campus visits
using Montana costs approx $43,000. Using Washington costs approx $90,000 of value

Washington used 40 evaluations, 61 home visits, 12 campus visits
using Washington costs approx $82,300. Using Montana costs approx $34,200 of value

However, as pdanao suggests, what if Washington had spread those evaluations into campus visits. (which seemed like the best cost ratio with under a 1.6-to-1 cost difference)

If Washington had used 5 evaluations, 62 home visits, 26 campus visits
using Washington costs approx $82,100. Using Montana costs approx $40,300 of value.

That's about $6,100 extra value while spending a couple hundred bucks less.

If he would have used the eval $ toward a visit hm or campus he would have won! It amazes me that people use the evals in d1. The only goo thing is they tell you the level of potential but the effort they provide per $ is no where close to a visit.

jd...

It actually was close....FSS indicated that he was "struggling between S. Carolina and Maryland"....and when I first went in on him, I threw enough so that he was coming to me....that lasted about 2 cycles before Maryland took the lead again, and I never made it up after that.....

In hindsight, I probably should have spent a little more on CV's and a little less on HV's.....I don't know for sure if it would have swayed things my way, but I think it would have been a little better use of my $$$

A simple recruiting question for veterans: how many of you simply max out CV (with the obvious exceptions: first cycle, pulldowns, when you want info, when you don't have enough $ for more CV) and how many mix in HV and/or other forms of effort?

Old Dominion and Virginia got into it again this season in Knight.

Still the same prestige difference D (OD) vs B- (Virg).

No way I was going to win this one with all the effort he put forth, but it might be interesting to compare anyway.

Michael Rodman was 10 miles from Old Dominion and about 90 from Virginia.

Effort:

Old Dominion - $53,647 from 10 miles
Start - YES
Minutes - 15
Campus Visits - 25
Home Visits - 107
Scouting Trips - 5
Phone Calls - 25
Coach Calls - 10
Letters - 10
misc. - declined 5 CV, 2 HV, and promised minutes twice

Virginia - $49k from 90 miles
Start - no
Minutes - 15
Campus Visits - 13
Home Visits - 100
Scouting Trips -
Phone Calls -
Coach Calls -
Letters -
misc. -

I'll try to fill in the blanks
