NOTE: This is edited from earlier post after receiving the other coach's information.
I also have a recent story from Smith World.
I was recruiting for my Montana team which has a B- prestige. In the first cycle, I got a PG located 20 miles away to consider me. The only other school that he was considering was Washington, which was 390 miles away and has a B+ prestige. We were the only two schools that he considered throughout the recruiting process. Based on the messages I received, I believe that I was in the lead most of the way and finally signed him during the 11 a.m. cycle the morning after signings started.
I ended up spending just over $43k. This was broken down as follows: 76 home visits, 24 campus visits, 5 scouting trips, 36 calls to the player and 2 calls to the coach. I promised 15 minutes and was also listed as the Childhood Favorite.
The Washington coach spent just over $83k. This was how he spent his funds: 61 home visits, 12 campus visits, 40 scouting trips, 26 calls to the player, 17 calls to the coach and 17 letters. He also guaranteed 20 minutes and a start.
So, the major difference was the breakdown between home visits, campus visits and scouting trips. He used far more scouting visits (40 vs. 5), which had a corresponding impact on his use of home visits (where I was +15) and campus visits (+12).
This difference in mix (plus whatever value I got from being the Childhood Favorite) was able to overcome the 2/3 grade prestige disadvantage, the difference in guaranteed minutes (20 vs. 15), the difference in letters/calls and the guaranteed start.
If Washington had done the exact same activities that I had done, it would have cost them about $90k. So, they couldn't have matched it, but they could have altered their mix to come close. For example, if they cut the scouting visits from 40 to 5, they could have added 15 campus visits, 24 home visits, or some combination of the two.
Would that have been more effective?
