doc,

obviously all this talk of avoiding the use of frosh.. no starting fr or soph if possible, etc, is for d2 and d3...right?

i know it is probably stating the obvious, but these days if you want to compete at d1, you really have to have some supersophs who start and some stud frosh who are key players off the bench. because if you are developing your program and having some success, you are going to be losing quite alot of players beofre they get to their senior year, so to make up for the lack of seniors, you have to add some at the younger end... right?

At D1 it is slightly different IMO, oldave. I still avoid starting a FR at all costs though. I usually have a FR backup or 2 on my most successfull teams, but never starting. One other thing that makes playing FR/SO an option in D1 is the fact that you can spend a lot more minutes on IQ practice without affecting a players end ratings since they are closer to being maxed out from the get go.

I would def not count on getting anything higher then that. It is possible but highly unlikely in my experiences
He showed up at C+ in Man... not exactly "like some collegiate upperclassmen", but does save me 1/2 a season or so in practice minutes.

I would never lean on a FR to be a key player, but have had no problems starting them with low distribution, alongside a stud G or PF/C. Big men can especially fit in, they come in as decent enough rebounders/defenders/shot blockers and usually low stamina. Set the FR at fairly fresh and the back-up at getting tired and it works pretty well.

Alot of times you have to promise a start at D1 in order to win a recruiting battle...at D2/D3 you can usually avoid starting FR as there are enough bodies to go around.
