New Coach Needs Roster Evaluation Topic

I am looking for an experienced coach to evaluate the below roster, for its potential at running a motion/press. I am in my first season of coaching, (Div III US Coast Guard), and this was my first recruiting class. After gathering information from previous posts, and the FAQ/Player guides, it seems that I may have a good foundation to work with, (core stats, building IQ level, etc), but again with my experience level with the game, I’m still not sure. I anticipate this season will be more of a building opportunity for preparation for the next few seasons due to the very young class makeup of the squad. Any tips on a starting lineup would also be greatly appreciated.

This team is in trouble for the future. You have one rebounder, even the rest of them are poor for freshman. I would strongly suggest experiment this season and get yourself a new team for the following year if you're interested in winning at all. Otherwise, the team you recruited will struggle to finish .500 when they're seniors.

Might go small ball.

PG Ross, SG moon, SF Yang, PF Pettis C Cram

That would put some talent out there and give you some ways to take advantage of your strengths.

You have a bunch of guys who kind of do the same thing. They cant all play where they belong. Only 1 SR, get the biggest slab of meat rebounder/blocker you can find for next year.

And if you are going to stick around cut somebody and take the hit.

Wouldn't Suazo be the better option at SG? He's much faster, more athletic and a better shooter, dribbler and passer, and the team seems to run FCP? I would maybe go with Allison over Yang at SF too for most of the same reasons (even though Yang is better PER)

My hat's off to you for picking a team with so many vacancies. Recruiting is difficult for new coaches. You've made some mistakes (rebounding has been mentioned) but you've also signed some players that I like (Ross and Pettis are my favorites). Without knowing their potential, of course, my evaluation could be flawed.

If you're running the press, you need quick athletes to be successful. (Some coaches prefer their big men to be more athletic than fast. I've had success with both.) Rebounding is crucial, too, in all sets.

I'd run slow tempo all season, unless you're much better than an opponent. With your youth, your team will struggle this season. Slow tempo will give you a chance for a few upsets. You face a lot of Sim-coached teams, which are usually weaker. So you could try normal tempo vs. some of them.

Freshman always struggle until their IQ's improve. You'll see better play in the last 1/3 of the season.

PG- Suazo and Ross

SG- Hurdock and Ross

SF- Allison and Yang

PF- Pettis and Day

C- Cram and Gomes

I'd probably alternate Gomes and Long at backup C for a few games. Gomes should be the better player but sometimes I'm surprised.

John Moon, unless he has high potential in both ATH and SP, is hopeless. William Duval is too slow to play guard and too weak on rebounding to play SF.

This is a fun game. Good luck!

I appreciate all of the feedback, with several good points to consider. Thank you all for the suggestions!

I'd say Suazo and Hudock need to be on the floor as much as possible. I agree with previous posts that you need to find a good FR with high potential in REB and LP for next season. In the meantime, I'd probably start these guys:

PG: Suazo (Ross backup)
SG: Allison (Yang)
SF: Hudock (Pettis)
PF: Cram (Duval)
C: Gomes (Day)

I'd set the distro to "5" or less for the freshmen. I might also set Suazo and Hudock to "getting tired" for playing time, while keeping the others at "fairly fresh." Lastly, I'd shoot no threes with this squad and suck your team in with a -4 defensive setting to make up for the lack of rebounders. If you want to run motion/press, you'll need to find guys with high ATH and SPD. Good luck!

I see you've won a couple and are holding your own on the boards. Good job!
