At least with hitters, I usually try to get a guy to AA when he's within 20% of his OVR, and to AAA when he's about 10% away.

So if a guy has an 80 over, he's at AA at 64 and AAA at 72.

Sometimes, I'll see that the guy's bat is improving much faster than his glove. And the question is, if promoting him early (to the majors, for example) is the difference between him being a good defensive LF and an average one, then I'm going to promote him. If the difference is between him being a MLB SS and a MLB 3B, I might wait.

I disagree with most of the opinions here. If a guy is good enough now (current ratings) to be your best option no your ML team, there is no reason not to use him. I would not bring him up to sit on the bench, he needs his ABs, but if he is a large improvement on your other options, I play him. I have brought 19 or 20 year olds up to the big leagues and never had any problems.

Now if he is going to be a complete stud AND his current ratings are only roughly equyivalent to your current big league guy, I would leave him down another season because you gain nothing this year by bringing him up and cost yourself one of his pre-arb years. But if he improves as he should this season, he is up with the big leagues next.

I had an IFA in Ron Cey about 5 seasons ago and I gave him a half of a year in AA before calling him up. His contact/power/vR/vL was projected to be 80/69/79/66. I brought him up when he was only about a 59-60 in those 4 categories. In the time he has been on my ML team, he has progressed swimmingly, and at 24 years old is only 1-2 pts off from any of his given projections. That said, the aforementioned issues with durability came into play and he was oft injured. I was lucky it was never anything serious.

what I am getting at here is that no matter what age you bring him up, he will continue to progress with playing time, but durability and injuries could make the deal not worth the gamble.

I have a good young C in AAA but I also have an All Star C on ML. It's best to keep the C in AAA and let him fully develop even if he doesn't crack the ML lineup until age 27. Player's develop when they get playing time, and my C in AAA wouldn't get much playing time in ML right now.

You can't trade him?
