I am new to HBD...actually I have baby sit a few times, but nothing more. I am interested in having my first team.I am not looking for a "dead ringer" or a total mess to start with. I want to learn, but I also know I will make mistakes. I am looking for a world to start into. I know alot of worlds are private, and some of the open leagues, have teams that would be totally overwhelming for me being my first team. If anyone one has a league they would accept a new owner into, please let me know.

Best bet is to find a team in one of the open leagues that was around .500 or so last season. You can learn theins and outs of the game, possibly be competitive, and since you are in a public league, its no big deal if you decide to quit after that first season and go seek a team in a private world that better suits your tastes.

uh, it is a big deal if you take a team in an open league, then decide to quit.

Poorly phrased. Open leagues can't screen owners. So they shouldn't be shocked and angry when they get one and done owners.

mid-season? yes. i dont see the problem with playing a full season then leaving.

phillyfan009, I'd suggest you start a thread in the Hardball Dynasty Classified section and ask prospective leagues to tell YOU why you should join their league. HBD worlds have a vested interest in recruiting new owners and RETAINING them by helping them learn the game.

HBD is complex and every new owner is somewhat overwhelmed by it all. But joining a world that actively recruits you, helps you understand the "ins and outs" AND has a strong, stable ownership base will ensure you don't get frustrated by the complexity and the potential mistakes.

DON'T look at worlds with more than 5 openings - no offense to those worlds, but really strong worlds have little to no turnover, year-to-year.

DO ask questions - why is the team available? How balanced is the league (i.e. has one team won the last 5 WS titles or 110 games every single year)? What is the culture of the world like (some leagues, like Moonlight Graham are filled with degenerate scumbags who say not-nice things about each other, while others, like Kinsella, have a more sedate and erudite membership that can, at times, be less than entertaining in its chat)

DON'T take a team without looking at the history (has it been .500 forever? a perennial loser? a former champion on the way down?) and the contract commitments in future seasons.

DO get a mentor. Check the pinned thread at the top of this forum for a list.

Good luck.

"Degenerate scumbags"?!?!

philly, yes, you have to start somewhere. and if you're in a league for a season, and it's miserable for you, then there's no point in staying, that's true.

but most leagues (public or private) would like a multi-year commitment. as mike said, public worlds can't control that, but when i was commish of a private world, i certainly considered a one-and-done as a negative factor in determining whether to let someone into the league. (of course, this can happen when someone takes over a team to help a league, and for other reasons that aren't negative.)

another way to look at it is this: there's no reason to take your commitment to a public league less seriously than you'd take your commitment to a private league.

true schedule........ I understand and agree.....I know building a reputation in a public league, gets you into the private league..I have no problem with that.......it is just trying to find a league to join....and see what the history is...as it was mentioned before.
