Informed RS - declined but signed? Topic

Have not seen this one yet. Informed Thompson (during recruiting) of the RS, and this was his "scholarship email" response -

"Hey Coach, I can pretty much scratch Kutztown U. off the list - redshirt me? I don't think so.

William Thompson"

Yet he signed any way. Is he going to accept the RS without a WE decline?

Yes he will not have a problem with it. As long as he signs with you, you are golden.

Just for future reference, I have not used the button yet. . but how much does it usually set you back in recruiting effort?

I've redshirted players, but usually they were behind several others on the depth chart and woudn't have and didn't complain even without the button.

usually at least a CV, maybe that plus a HV depending on the player

It really depends. I've seen it take significantly more than that.

That sounds about right, glen. Here's how I've always done it. A) Make sure you are the only school the player is considering. B) Spend a fair amount on him before the cycle you make the offer C) Offer a CV or HV/CV at least in the cycle you make the offer. D) Ignore any negative comments the player may make after the offer.

I have never had a player drop me using this method and they all took the RS without a drop in WE.

about a year after the Redshirt button was introduced I thought I'd give it a try in D3.

Had a recruit considering me after about $1100. Gave him the inform of redshirt, a couple home visits plus a campus visit. He naturally declined and dropped me from his consider list. So now I was in to him about $2500. Somehow this wasn't working like the manual said it would.

I ended up dropping $7900 on the D3 guy and he still wasn't considering me even though he kept accepting all home and campus visits. I finally gave in and removed the redshirt. He signed the next cycle.

Once he showed up, I tried redshirting him and he, being the consumate team player, took it right away.

Since then I've avoided that inform of redshirt button at D3 & D2.

how much it takes depends

depends on how good a prospect he is

depends on the prestige of your school - if he is thrilled that you are considering him, he will be fine

depends on how much of a team player, ride the bus, always help a teammate kinda guy he is
