Where in the World is Casper, WY Topic

Not sure why this is but in all three worlds that I'm in Casper, WY is listed as being 2400 miles away from Los Angeles. This is nearly 1200 miles FURTHER than anywhere else in Wyoming from LA. According to WIS, Casper, WY is roughly the same distance away from California as Vermont is. It's amusing unless you're high on a recruit from there and you have to overpay to get him.

If you contact WIS, I'm sure they can fix this. I once told them they had a school in the wrong state and it was promptly corrected.

I think it is an issue with the JUCO school vs. hometown.

In Phelan, Carl August http://whatifsports.com/hd/RecruitProfile/Ratings.aspx?rid=1582280 is listed as a JUCO from Casper College in Casper, WY. He is listed as being from Casper, WY when you search for recruits.

He signed with Valparaiso and on their recruiting page http://whatifsports.com/hd/TeamProfile/Recruiting.aspx?tid=14047 , he is listed as being from Pine Bluff, AR.

If you search on the recruiting page, he appears in the WY search, but not in the AR search, but his mileage is based on the AR location.

For the record: actual driving distance is 1089 mi, while 2400 miles from LA in the direction of Casper, WY would land you roughly in or about Lake Winnipeg.

Vermont is more like 3000 miles from LA - 2400 miles in that direction only gets you to Cleveland.

And yeah, send a ticket.

Because the one in Rupp is not a JUCO.

It is not a problem with calculating the mileage for Casper, it is whether they are using the JUCO mileage, or the hometown mileage that needs to be checked into.

Whichever mileage they are using, that is the location that needs to come up when you search by state (but that is not the case for the guy in Phelan).

Without knowing anything I agree with hbmerlin on what is going on here.

And they do use the JuCo's location for those players.

Some day, after driving 10 hours and still not having arrived at my destination, I'll mention to my car occupants -
"It must be those JUCO miles".

Z- That's what I thought too. But it seems that for this guy (at least) they are using the JUCO location when you search, but the mileage is based on his hometown.

Also you have to remember there are a few types of JuCo's. Is this kid a created JuCo or a non-qualifier JuCo?

I think there are regular RW miles (mapquest), Juco miles apparently and WIS miles which I'm not sure how these are calculated. You're correct, Vermont is closer to 3K miles away but upon quick glance WIS is off by almost 17%. They list Newport, VT as being 2540 miles away from Northridge, CA whereas Mapquest lists the difference @ 2964 miles - off by about 424 miles. Only this time it cuts the distance shorter but not like you are really getting a break when it's over 2K miles away with recruiting.

WIS miles, I believe, are as the crow flies.
12/18/2009 8:46 PM
yes that is correct.
