I was wondering if recruiting more heavily for defense can work? Does anyone out there have a successful history of recruiting for D-fense and shutting down the other team and just getting by on offense?

i am a defense first coach. but with my defense being the press, that means the defense category itself is not my highest priority. still, you can definitely have a shut down defense. my theory is, any offense, even a great one, is inconsistent. but a great defense wins championships.

i don't think you should be too imbalanced though. a great defense is most effective with a good offense. its not worth having a great defense and a ****** offense, its much better to have a fairly good defense and offense. i just personally prefer great def/good off over good def/great off.

oh thats all I was wondering, is can I get by with an offense that wont put up 80-100 really ever. Just be able to shut them down to the tone of like 50-60 and just out score that.

i put up 80-100 rarely. 70ppg is usually about where my best teams sit.

The press just utilizes speed better than any other defensive set.

I have the best D in Phelan through 5 games :]

But we have not played any good teams yet, so Idk how good we actually are.

Yes... speed and def, with ath a close third.

If you can mix in above average passing and one or two offensive minded players on the bench your offense will be good enough.

As an aside, 3 guard line-ups always cut into the "magic" of the press.

I have always looked to defense (man to man) first and it has gotten me to sweet 16's. I am transitioning to more speed and press to see what that will do.
