Minor Leaguers w/ ML contracts Topic

A guy on the 40-man burns an option year if he is in the minors. He does not have to be called up and sent down to use an option. Just being on the 40-man roster and being in the minors is considered an optional assignment.

The reason Ducey has not burned any option years is because of a glitch. Signing IFAs or Draft picks to ML deals automatically puts them on the 40-man, but it will not create a transaction that says they have been placed on the 40-man. If you were to remove him from the 40-man and then place him back on, he would use an option year.

You never know. What until late in the day during the end of the season when Revokeable Waivers can be used, and submit your entire 40 man roster at the same time. Since owners can only claim 2 per day there is a decent chance that good players can slip thru. Of course in this case its been publicized so you're probably right, but I'm surprised more owners don't do the mass Revokeable option to be able to trade or send guys down.

Its especially useful if you are out of the playoff picture and have a ML player with 152 ML days. If he clears you can send him down and he won't accrue the ML season.

I cant really get a good answer from the support ticket. They refered me to a knowledge base that says he should be using option years.

"All players start with 3 at the beginning of their career. The first time a player is added to a club's 40-man roster, his option clock starts ticking. Any subsequent season in which the player accrues 20 or more days on optional assignment (i.e. days on a minor league club from the start of the regular season until the team's final game including playoffs), an option year will be burned. If he's on the big league club for the season or on optional assignment for less than 20 days during the season, he doesn't burn an option. During a season in which a player has options, he may be demoted/recalled at will. Once his options are gone, he must go through waivers before he may be demoted or removed from the 40-man roster."

I responded asking why Ducey has not used any options and they responded back with..

"Options work exactly the same way. If they are on the 40 man roster and spend at least 20 days in the minor leagues in a season, they will use an option year. If they are assigned to the ML roster and stay there, they will not use an option year."

Dont think they are understanding the situation very well... "Options work exactly the same way. If they are on the 40"All players start with 3 at the beginning of their career. Support has finally recognized the problem.

"There appears to be a problem here with regards to the first year of his ML contract. It should have used an option that season. We'll review the logic and correct.

Thanks"
