Do you budget for promotions and prospects? How much?

You definitely have to budget for those. It all depends on the state of your team, but if you do not plan on promoting a bunch of young guys to the bigs then 1M should be plenty.

For a new owner, I'd recommend at least $5M in reserve after all expected expenses. It wouldn't have to be wasted as it could be used in acquiring pricy players in trades and the like or transfered to prospects late if that didn't happen.

For promotions, I'd agree with strikeout26.

As for prospects, that depends largely on your draft position and your players payroll (if you have a low payroll, you can keep a lot of money in prospects to sign your draft picks and IFAs).

In your budget you will need a minimum one to two million for major/minor league promotions, and a quarter million for signing rookies in the draft. If you can afford it, having an extra million or two in reserve may swing a deal or help you pick up that free agent or waiver wire acquisition if you find a hole that can't be fixed from within.
