How to beat a + defense with guards Topic

If you encounter a defense that plays a +3. Assuming your three point offense will be shut down, would you counter it by:

A)Setting your guards to -2
B)Set your guards to 0 distribution and dump it inside?

I'm not saying I would necessarily use one of these two options, but wanted to know which strategy would work best in this situation?

Yes. Kind of.

A) reduce 3 pt setting by "1" instead of putting it at -2.
B) keep guards shooting but skew shots to the bigs.

Same as mentioned just to a lesser degree. That's just me and my style. I play straight up mostly and mostly lose, too. Unless(!) I'm a big underdog then I might go extreme.

If you have quick and athletic guards they should just drive by the +3 and take it to the rim (or pull up for mid-range jumpers). Reducing the 3pt setting by 1 might be a good idea like jenningss said.

I don't think you should need to change your distro unless your guards aren't quick enough to get around the +3. Just my 2 cents...

So change the settings to +1, even though in high probability your guards won't make a 3 point shot? I always set my SG's to +2. I guess what I was asking was what do you do with your guards if you know the 3 point shot will be taken away?

I guess I'm not a big fan of the long range 2 point jumper.

First, I would refrain from setting your guards to +2. It causes them to force 3pt shots. I believe he was suggesting moving them to -1 if you know a +3 is coming, which I would agree with.

i would say A is the lesser of two evils, but would definitely recommend you don't use either approach. something more moderate is a possibility, though. for A), maybe set them to -1 if they are 0, or 0 if they are +1. for B), maybe decrease the guard distro modestly.

one thing to keep in mind is HD automatically takes a lot of this stuff into account. for example, if you have a guy going up a great defender, he is naturally going to shoot less. one big mistake young coaches make is over compensating, not realizing the engine is already compensating to some degree. there are certainly cases where it is good to compensate more than the engine, but often, you need not adjust distro for a game.
