My team shoots 62 percent from the line, while my opponents are shooting 72 percent. Any ideas on how to improve on this? Too bad there's not a practice category for "standing around."

If you are serious, recruit better FT shooters. In today's HD, good FT shooters are born, not made. That HS FT% is really pretty close to most kids college career numbers, regardless of potential, although high potential FT% does mean it can be improved about a grade level over a few seasons.

He said free throw defense, not sure exactly what that means. Maybe he was referring to screaming at the foul shooter when he releases the ball when he's at the line.

Recruit high speed, athleticism, defense, and core ratings. This will cause you to win games, increasing your HCA, which may improve your free throw defense. Good luck with that, though.

He was being sarcastic.

Talk to Coach Bennett over at UVA. His FT% against this season is 56.6%. Talk about a great defensive coach.

It's much more sophisticated than that. Each time, it's a different screamer so the shooter doesn't know what to expect. Sometimes the screamer is standing right behind the shooter ...that's particularly effective. I've seen players actually jump across the line when shooting, thus negating the free throw

the best free throw defense is to have chuck hays on your team. once you watch that guy take a few of them, you can never think of free throws the same way again. i don't understand it personally, when he was a young player at UK he shot them fine. he got worse every year. i don't even know if he is still pro, but last time i watched him, i couldn't believe he was serious. it was like somebody is tasering him in the back right before he shoots, his back convulses, and then he half stutter steps, and then shoots. i half expected the refs to call a travel :P anyway, i figure if someone watches him take a few free throws, and then goes to take some and he is standing there and does the back spasm stutter step thing, the shooter would have to bust out laughing. and, that whole thing where if you think about doing something right and see the ball go in, you do it better... well, i have to imagine that would work against you if you just watched chuck shoot a couple.

56 percent? Now that's great FT defense.

Just curious, but is there a difference by position, in general, in how well people shoot free throws?(IN other words out of the world of all centers do they tend to shoot FT's worse than all PG's in the universe of the game) If they do, double teaming posts and collapsing down low might get you more fouls on post players who don't shoot free throws as well. . .dunno. ..
