Once again a low prestige limits what's available. I thought dropping Nagata would be wise at this point since it would better balance my classes a bit, but I think I would have been better in the short term to keep him. I really wanted to find a solid PF replacement, but all the options I wanted were quickly snapped up and I was with a number of SFs that had decent rebouding. Marten's high potential in ath and spd will help on the defensive end, but Henderson St. will be playing small-ball most of the time unless I can start finding better rebouding players that still have adequate ath and spd potential.

I'm hoping this will be a postseason year in Arkadelphia so the prestige can move into the B range and some better recruits will be available over the next 2 seasons.

I'm just taking over Oauchita Baptist but I sure hope I don't end up in last place! The B- prestigue definitely didn't help in recruiting but I got a bunch of guys with high potential in the right spots. I'm very interested to see how my PG, Cho, works out who has very high potential but only a 17 WE.

Do any of you sign players without knowing all their "potentials". I limited my recruting area so that I could get all the info from FSS but i remember from DIII that often the best available players are 500+ miles away. How do you guys deal with that?
4/15/2009 8:06 AM
I have always used FSS to avoid getting a complete dud. I usually take a look early at states within a 70 mile radius if I see a player that I think I might want. Since I've been at Henderson St. and have had a poor prestige, I've had to look at nearly every recruit that is close to me. If none of those are worthwhile (or attainable), then I tend to wait a little while until closer to signings and start looking at what players have dropped. I'll look at multiple states and won't really stay close to home if I really want to see a player's potential.

Sometimes you can find a gem in a state with very few recruits out west because it might get ignored by other coaches who don't want to waste money scouting a state that has very few recruits to look for (that's just a theory). It also helps to wait a little while to get a discount on a larger state....buy a bunch of small states before buying Texas and maybe wait until after signings begin to lower the cost some. It's been hard at Henderson St., but I've had lots of success with it in Wooden, Knight, and Naismith.

Successfully making the NT, but bowing out in the 1st round lead to a bump to B- prestige and in a rare recruiting season, lots of ranked DI players were available even to this level of prestige. I had a shot at the #196 PF, but didn't think he, or any of the other ranked PFs would still be around and Abrams looked like a decent PF option. He will be a better player than the current PF, Beeler, but that isn't saying too much. Abrams may become a four-year backup if this proves to be a successful run to the NT. Ziegenfuss really was my 4th option behind a player named Spada that signed with St. Martin's and Helt who was considering another school when Ziegenfuss signed, but was not considering any school later in the day and was still unsigned. The other option, Barnett, signed with Virginia St. He would have been an outstanding PG who would have wreaked havoc on defense with 90+ ath and spd. Ziegenfuss, ranked #200 at PG, was one of a handful of ranked PGs that gave me the time of day. He does not have overwhelming potential, but has good starting points in core areas. I am worried about his low perimeter that lacks potential to improve, but he should be a big speed guy who may protect the ball reasonably well. He should project to be better than the current PG Jarrett by his senior year.

I have high expectations for this senior-laden team. Anything less than the sweet 16 will be considered a failure and I think there is potential if the RNG falls right for this to be a final four contender and see another bump in prestige before I need to replace a lot of players.

Strong work again, oldwarrior. Although it does concern me that Harding is progressively slipping year by year... but that is not your fault.

I miss this thread. Especially seeing just how bad my recruits started out that first year. I can't believe I recruited a SG with 33 passing!
