I'm currently at a low-level D1 school. I'm thinking about applying to a higher-level school after the season. There are likely to be 3 or 4 openings I'd be interested in. But I have a borderline resume... so other interested coaches would likely be able to beat me out. There's one job I definitely prefer over the others (call it Team A), but if I decide to make the move up, I'd rather get any one of them than none.
I assume my best strategy in this situation is simply to apply to all 3-4 jobs at once, and just be happy if I get one of them.
Ideally, I'd apply just to Team A, and if I didn't get it, apply to the other 2-3 schools after being rejected, but then I run the risk that those other jobs have already been snatched up by that time.
Is there any way to maximize my odds of getting Team A, and still have a shot at the other jobs if I don't get it? (I'm guessing not, but I'm asking just in case I've overlooked something...).
Finally, if you apply for multiple jobs, what is the logic that dictates which one you end up getting? (Assuming you are the best candidate to apply in each case). Is it purely random, or do you get the highest prestige job, lowest prestige job, or what?
