what is a good amount to spend here? how far should I go just the states that surround my home state since that is where majority of recruiting should occur?

At DII, in Omaha, you may not find many good recruits near your school. It varies from year to year.

As to how much to spend, make sure you leave enough to sign the players you want. The exact amount is up to you

At DII I usually budget $3000 to $4000 per scholarship. So whatever you have above that you can put into FSS. Recruiting costs go up alot when you get over 360 (i think) miles away, so if you can stay within that it is beneficial.

before you use FSS on a state, first look at the recruits in that state and make sure that there are kids there who you would want if FSS says they have good potential - no point in getting FSS if there is no kid who could fit

What he said. DUring the season comb through the recruits and make a list of those that look interesting before you have FSS. THen see which states have the highest concentrations of those players. . .

that is for sure important advice at DI. At DII and DIII, you may need to be more flexible but still follow that advice

it also depends on what schemes you run - for example, a zone team can use guys with a wider range of skills than a man or press team - where you just cant play a guy with weak DEF in a man.....or a guy with weak ATH/SPD in a press

I would def FSS whatever states are withing 70 mile range of your school. Higher ranked recruits will drop to you if they are within that range so I want to know anything and everything about all recruits within 70. After that, follow these guys advice and do it on a player to player basis almost.
